J. M. W. Turner (1775–1851) was an English Romantic painter, printmaker, and watercolourist known for his landscapes, seascapes, and innovative use of light and colour. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest British artists and a precursor to Impressionism.

Early life and education

Turner was born in London in 1775 and entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1789. He developed artistic skill early and began exhibiting while still young.

Artistic style and subjects

Turner is known for landscapes, marine paintings, watercolours, and engravings. His work emphasized light, colour, weather, movement, and atmosphere, especially in his mature years. His subjects included dramatic seascapes, storms, historical scenes, and contemporary technology. His later work became increasingly fluid and abstract, influencing later modern art.

Career and reputation

Turner was successful in his lifetime and became a Royal Academician. Although some later works were criticised, he was later celebrated as one of Britain’s greatest artists and a forerunner of Impressionism.

Turner left a large body of work that strongly influenced later painters. His name is associated with British Romantic art, the elevation of landscape painting, and early modernist abstraction. Much of his work is now held in major public collections, especially Tate Britain.
