Jarome Iginla is a Canadian former professional ice hockey right winger who played 20 seasons in the NHL from 1996 to 2017. He is best known for his long tenure with the Calgary Flames, where he became the franchise’s all-time leader in games played, goals and points, and for winning multiple major individual awards in 2001–02. He also won two Olympic gold medals with Team Canada.

Early life and junior career

Iginla was born in Edmonton, Alberta, and rose through Canadian junior hockey before entering the NHL. He was drafted 11th overall by the Dallas Stars in 1995 and was quickly traded to Calgary before playing an NHL game for Dallas.

NHL career

Iginla became one of the NHL’s premier power forwards, spending most of his career with the Calgary Flames and later playing for Pittsburgh, Boston, Colorado and Los Angeles. He finished with 625 goals and 1,300 points in the regular season.

Awards and records

His 2001–02 season produced the NHL’s scoring title and goal-scoring title, along with the players’ MVP award. He became the Calgary Flames’ all-time leader in games, goals and points and was later inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

International career

Iginla represented Canada at multiple major tournaments, including three Olympic Winter Games. He won gold in 2002 and 2010 and was also a standout at the 1996 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Legacy

Iginla is widely regarded as one of the top players of his era and a significant figure in Canadian hockey. His career is also notable for his achievements as a Black athlete in a predominantly white sport.
