Jim Rutherford is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender and NHL executive. He played in the NHL from 1969 to 1983 and later served as a general manager and hockey operations executive for the Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Vancouver Canucks. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2019 as a builder.
Playing career
Rutherford was a goaltender in the NHL from 1969 to 1983. He played for the Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings, and Toronto Maple Leafs, finishing with a record of 151 wins, 227 losses, and 59 ties in 457 regular-season games.
Executive career
After his playing career, Rutherford moved into management roles, including with the Hartford Whalers and later the Carolina Hurricanes. He later served as general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins, helping build teams that won the Stanley Cup in 2006 (with Carolina) and in 2016 and 2017 (with Pittsburgh).
Honours and recognition
Rutherford was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2019 as a builder. In 2020, the Ontario Hockey League renamed its best-goaltender award the Jim Rutherford Trophy in his honour.
Later career
Rutherford joined the Vancouver Canucks’ hockey operations leadership after his Pittsburgh tenure. He served as president of hockey operations and later as a senior advisor and alternate governor with the club.
