Early life and education

John Nash was born in Bluefield, West Virginia, in 1928. He studied mathematics at the Carnegie Institute of Technology and later at Princeton University. At Princeton, he completed the dissertation that introduced his equilibrium concept.

Nash’s work in game theory introduced the Nash equilibrium and helped establish non-cooperative game theory as a major field. He also produced influential results in differential geometry, algebraic geometry, and partial differential equations.

Awards and recognition

Nash received the 1994 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for pioneering analysis of equilibria in non-cooperative games. He shared the prize with John Harsanyi and Reinhard Selten. In 2015, he and Louis Nirenberg received the Abel Prize for contributions to partial differential equations.

Personal life and later years

Nash was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 1959. His later life drew wide public attention, particularly as the subject of the biography "A Beautiful Mind" and the film adaptation. Nash died in a car accident in 2015 with his wife, Alicia Nash.
