He is widely regarded as one of the leading portrait artists of his era and also worked in watercolour, murals, landscapes, and other genres. He created about 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolours, along with many drawings.

Early life and training

Sargent was born in Florence, Italy, on 12 January 1856, to American parents. He was raised largely in Europe and studied art in Italy and France, which shaped his international career and cosmopolitan subject matter.

Portrait career

He gained fame in Paris and later London for elegant portraits of aristocrats, industrialists, writers, and social leaders. His work captured both surface refinement and psychological presence. He became one of the most sought-after portrait painters of the Edwardian era. His painting Madame X caused a scandal at the Paris Salon in 1884.

Other work and style

Beyond portraiture, Sargent painted murals, landscapes, and watercolours, and he worked in a loose, fluid style admired for technical skill. His later work included more informal and impressionistic subjects. He also produced war-related works such as Gassed.

Legacy

Sargent is considered a major figure in late academic and early modern painting. His work remains important in studies of transatlantic art and elite society in the Belle Époque and Edwardian periods. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1894 and a full Academician in 1897.
