Early life and career

Gacy was born in Chicago in 1942 and later worked as a contractor in the Chicago area. He also performed as a clown at charitable and children's events, which contributed to his public image before his arrest.

Crimes

Between 1972 and 1978, Gacy raped, tortured, and murdered at least 33 boys and young men, most of them in Cook County, Illinois. Many of the bodies were later found buried under or around his property.

Investigation and arrest

Gacy came under police scrutiny in 1978 during an investigation into the disappearance of Robert Piest. Searches of his property uncovered human remains, leading to his arrest and prosecution.

Trial and execution

Gacy was convicted of 33 murders in 1980 and sentenced to death. He was executed by lethal injection on May 10, 1994, at Stateville Correctional Center in Illinois.
