Joseph Smith Jr. (1805–1844) was an American religious leader who founded The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is known for claiming visions, translating the Book of Mormon, and organizing the church in 1830. He was killed in 1844 in Carthage, Illinois, and became a central figure in Latter Day Saint history.
Early life
Joseph Smith Jr. was born on December 23, 1805, in Sharon, Vermont, and grew up in a farming family that later moved through parts of Vermont, New York, and elsewhere in the northeastern United States.
Religious claims and Book of Mormon
Smith said he received visions and divine direction beginning in his youth. He later said he translated the Book of Mormon from golden plates and published it in 1830.
Founding of the church
In 1830, Smith organized The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and became its first president. Under his leadership, the movement developed new teachings, leaders, and communities.
Later life and death
Smith faced intense opposition, legal conflict, and violence in the 1840s, especially in Illinois. He was killed in Carthage, Illinois, on June 27, 1844.
