Early life and education

Douglass was born in Pelham, New York, and began competitive swimming as a child. She burst into national prominence in 2016 by breaking a long-standing U.S. age-group record in the 50-yard freestyle. She later attended the University of Virginia, where she combined elite swimming with academic study in statistics.

Collegiate career

At Virginia, Douglass became one of the most decorated swimmers in NCAA history, winning numerous individual and relay championships. She was noted for becoming the first swimmer to win individual NCAA titles in three different strokes at one meet in 2022. She has also set American records in short-course events including the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard breaststroke.

International career

Douglass made her Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 and later became a major medal contender at world championships and the Paris 2024 Olympics. She won bronze in the 200m individual medley at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. At the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, she won gold in the 200m breaststroke and the women’s 4×100m medley relay, and silver in the 200m individual medley and 4×100m freestyle relay. She has also won world championship medals in multiple strokes.

Douglass has held American records in several short-course events and has been widely described as one of the most versatile swimmers of her generation.
