Geography

Lagos is located in southwestern Nigeria on the coast of the Bight of Benin and the Gulf of Guinea. Its urban area developed around islands, lagoons, and the mainland, with Lagos Island at the historic core.

History

Lagos was inhabited largely by Yoruba people and later became part of the Kingdom of Benin before British control in the 19th century. It became a colony under Britain, then the capital of colonial Nigeria in 1914 and the federal capital of independent Nigeria from 1960 to 1991.
