Lanny King McDonald (born February 16, 1953 in Hanna, Alberta) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. He played 16 seasons in the NHL, scoring 500 goals and 1,006 points in 1,111 regular-season games. Best known for his distinctive red moustache, he helped the Calgary Flames win their first Stanley Cup in 1989 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992.

Early life and junior hockey

McDonald was born in Hanna, Alberta, and played junior hockey with the Calgary Centennials and Medicine Hat Tigers in the Western Canadian Hockey League. He was selected fourth overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft.

NHL playing career

McDonald began his NHL career with the Toronto Maple Leafs, later played for the Colorado Rockies, and then spent the remainder of his career with the Calgary Flames. His most productive season came in 1982–83, when he scored 66 goals for the Flames, a franchise record that still stands.

1989 Stanley Cup and honours

McDonald helped lead the Calgary Flames to their first Coupe Stanley championship in 1989 and retired after that season. He received major individual honours, including the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, the King Clancy Memorial Trophy, and Hockey Hall of Fame induction in 1992.
