Gameplay

Players take turns throwing weighted darts underhand toward a target ring placed on the ground. Points are awarded for landing inside or near the target, depending on the rules used. Standard sets typically include four large darts and two targets.

History

Modern lawn darts became popular in North America in the mid-20th century, especially from the 1950s onward. They were sold under names such as Jarts and appeared in backyard game markets for several decades.

Safety concerns and bans

The game became associated with serious injuries, especially to children, because of its heavy metal-tipped darts. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission banned the sale of metal-tipped lawn darts in 1988, and Canada followed with similar restrictions shortly after.

Legacy

Although the original metal-tipped game was banned in North America, lawn darts remain a well-known example of a discontinued backyard game. Safer plastic or redesigned versions have occasionally appeared in the market.
