It was positioned as a more driver-focused alternative to the Lexus ES and competed with German luxury sedans such as the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The Lexus GS was sold in Canada as part of Lexus’s luxury sedan lineup and was a familiar rival to German executive sedans in the Canadian market.

History

The Lexus GS was introduced as a luxury sedan based on the Japanese-market Toyota Aristo. It became a long-running Lexus model across four generations before being discontinued in 2020. The GS launched in Japan in 1991 as the Toyota Aristo and was sold as the Lexus GS in export markets from 1993.

Design and positioning

The GS was marketed as a more performance-oriented midsize luxury sedan than the Lexus ES. It competed with established European and Japanese executive sedans in the same class. The GS was a rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan aimed at buyers wanting a sportier Lexus than the ES.

Powertrains and variants

Over its life, the GS offered V6, V8, hybrid, and performance GS F variants. The fourth generation was introduced for the 2013 model year and later received a facelift in 2015. The GS F performance model used a 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8. Later versions included rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations.

Discontinuation

Lexus ended the GS line in 2020 after declining sales and a broader shift in the brand’s focus toward crossovers and SUVs. The ES occupied the GS’s general market space in many regions.
