Liz Cheney is an American attorney and former politician who served as the U.S.

Liz Cheney is an American attorney and former politician who served as the U.S. representative for Wyoming’s at-large congressional district from 2017 to 2023. A Republican, she also served as chair of the House Republican Conference from 2019 to 2021 and became widely known for her criticism of Donald Trump and her role in the investigation of the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. She is the daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney.

Early life and education

Cheney was born in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1966, to Dick Cheney and Lynne Cheney. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Colorado College and a Juris Doctor from the University of Chicago Law School.

Congressional career

Cheney, the daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney, represented Wyoming’s at-large congressional district in the U.S. House from 2017 to 2023. During her tenure, she rose to the position of chair of the House Republican Conference, the third-highest Republican leadership position in the House, serving from 2019 to 2021.

Break with Donald Trump

Cheney became one of the most prominent Republican critics of Donald Trump, especially after the 2020 election and the January 6 attack on the Capitol. She played a leading role in the House investigation into the January 6 attack. Her position led to a major split with much of the Republican Party, and she lost renomination in Wyoming’s 2022 Republican primary to Harriet Hageman.

Later work

After leaving Congress, Cheney became a professor of practice at the University of Virginia Center for Politics as of March 2023. She has also remained a public figure on constitutional and democratic issues.
