He served as the last viceroy of British India and the first governor-general of independent India, and later held senior Royal Navy and defence posts. Early life and family

Mountbatten was born in Windsor in 1900 into the Battenberg family, which had close ties to European royalty. He was related to several members of the British royal family, including Prince Philip and King Charles III.

Naval career

He joined the Royal Navy and rose to senior command during the Second World War. His wartime service included leadership in the South East Asia theatre and later senior defence appointments in Britain.

India and public service

In 1947 he became the last viceroy of British India and oversaw the transition to independence. He then served as the first governor-general of independent India and later held top defence roles, including First Sea Lord and Chief of the Defence Staff.

Death and legacy

Mountbatten was assassinated by the Provisional Irish Republican Army in 1979 while on a fishing trip off the coast of Ireland. His death was widely reported and remains a major event in late 20th-century British and Irish history.
