Early life and education

Madeleine Albright was born Marie Jana Korbel on May 15, 1937, in Prague, Czechoslovakia. She later moved to the United States and pursued higher education before entering public life.

Diplomatic career

Albright served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations from 1993 to 1997. In 1997, she was confirmed as secretary of state, becoming the first woman to serve in that role.

Secretary of state

As secretary of state from 1997 to 2001 under President Bill Clinton, her policy priorities included NATO expansion, nuclear non-proliferation, humanitarian intervention in Kosovo, and support for democratization. She also backed improved relations with Vietnam and ratification of the Kyoto Protocol. Her diplomacy affected NATO, the Balkans, and broader transatlantic relations, all of which were important to Canadian foreign policy and security cooperation.

Later life and writings

After leaving government in 2001, Albright remained active in policy, writing, and public commentary. She published several books, including memoirs and works on authoritarianism. She died on March 23, 2022, in Washington, D.C., at age 84.
