Early life

Ranjit Singh was born in 1780 in Gujranwala, then part of the Punjab region now in Pakistan. He succeeded his father as chief of the Sukerchakia Misl in 1792.

He captured Lahore in 1799 and proclaimed himself maharaja in 1801. Over the following years, he expanded and consolidated control across much of Punjab.
