Early life and education

Marcus Luttrell was born in Houston, Texas, in 1975 and grew up in Texas. He and his twin brother, Morgan, trained for SEAL service from a young age. He attended Sam Houston State University.

Navy SEAL career

Luttrell joined the United States Navy in March 1999. He completed BUD/S training with Class 228 after recovering from an early training injury and became a Navy SEAL. He served with SEAL Team Ten and later returned for another tour before being medically retired in 2007.

Operation Red Wings

On June 28, 2005, Luttrell and three other SEALs were sent on a reconnaissance mission in Afghanistan as part of Operation Red Wings. The team was discovered and ambushed by Taliban fighters, and Luttrell was the only survivor.

Writing and public life

Luttrell authored *Lone Survivor* (2007) and later *Service* (2012), sharing his military experiences and perspective on the war. He became involved in veteran support work through the Lone Survivor Foundation, which he co-founded in 2010, and related public appearances.

Recognition and legacy

Luttrell received the Navy Cross for his actions during Operation Red Wings, along with the Purple Heart. His story became widely known through his memoir and the 2013 film adaptation *Lone Survivor*.
