Maria Shriver was born on November 6, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, into the Kennedy and Shriver families. She grew up in a politically prominent household. She earned a B.A. in American Studies from Georgetown University in 1977.

Shriver began her career at local television stations before moving to CBS News. She joined NBC News in 1986. Her work at NBC included reporting for Dateline, co-anchoring Olympic coverage, and hosting the interview program First Person with Maria Shriver.
