Mario Dumont

Mario Dumont is a Canadian former politician and television personality from Quebec.

Mario Dumont (born May 19, 1970) is a Canadian former politician and television personality from Quebec. He was a Member of the National Assembly of Quebec for Rivière-du-Loup from 1994 to 2009 and led the Action démocratique du Québec (ADQ) from 1994 until 2009. He later became a media commentator and television host.

Early life and education

Mario Dumont was born in Cacouna, Quebec, on May 19, 1970. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economic studies from Concordia University in 1993.

Political career

Dumont entered politics in the late 1980s and was active in the Quebec Liberal Party youth wing. He helped found the Action démocratique du Québec (ADQ) in 1994 and became its leader the same year. In the 1994 provincial election, he was first elected to the National Assembly of Quebec as the MNA for Rivière-du-Loup. He remained an ADQ member of the National Assembly until 2009.

Leadership of the ADQ

As ADQ leader, Dumont promoted an autonomist Quebec platform focused on greater provincial autonomy, state modernization, individual liberties, and economic development. The party’s strongest result came in the 2007 provincial election, when it became the official opposition, and Dumont served as Leader of the Opposition.

Later career

Dumont resigned from politics in 2009 and moved into private-sector and media work. He became a television host and commentator, including presenting a French-language current affairs program. His post-political career has been described in media reports as including private-sector roles and ongoing media commentary.
