Marlo Thomas is an American actress, producer, author, and social activist best known for starring in the television sitcom That Girl and for creating the children's media project Free to Be... You and Me. She has also been a long-time advocate for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and has received major honours including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Early life and family

Marlo Thomas was born Margaret Julia Thomas in Detroit, Michigan, on November 21, 1937. She is the daughter of entertainer Danny Thomas, who founded St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Acting career

Thomas is best known for playing Ann Marie in That Girl, the role that brought her national fame. She later appeared in other television, film, and stage projects and received multiple major entertainment awards.

Free to Be... You and Me

In the 1970s, Thomas created Free to Be... You and Me, a children's franchise that included recordings and television specials. The project became closely associated with themes of gender equality and childhood independence.

Philanthropy and advocacy

Thomas has long served as National Outreach Director for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Her public work has also included support for women’s rights and other social causes.

Recognition
