Development and launch

The McLaren P1 was unveiled in 2012 and customer deliveries began in October 2013. It was positioned as a successor to McLaren’s earlier F1 road car and as a competitor in the modern hybrid hypercar segment. The P1 was McLaren’s first road car with a hybrid drivetrain.

Powertrain and performance

The P1 uses a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine combined with an electric motor and a dual-clutch transmission. McLaren published combined output of 916 PS (903 bhp; 674 kW) and 900 Nm of torque. The official top speed is 350 km/h (217 mph).

Production and rarity

McLaren built 375 P1 units between 2013 and 2015. The model was sold out before production ended, making it one of the marque’s most exclusive road cars. Production ended in 2015.

Significance

The P1 is widely regarded as one of the defining hybrid hypercars of the 2010s. It helped establish the performance-hybrid formula later associated with McLaren’s Ultimate Series.
