Lyle Menendez was born in 1968 and Erik Menendez in 1970. They were the sons of José Menendez, a business executive, and Mary Louise "Kitty" Menendez. Their case drew major public attention because of the family wealth, the violent nature of the killings, and the televised court proceedings.

The murders and trials

The brothers shot and killed their parents in their Beverly Hills home on August 20, 1989. They were arrested in 1990. A first trial ended without a verdict; they were convicted in a later retrial in 1996 of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
