Founded by Zhu Yuanzhang (the Hongwu Emperor), it followed the Mongol-led Yuan Dynasty and was succeeded by the Qing Dynasty. The Ming period is known for strong central rule, cultural flourishing, major construction projects, and maritime expeditions under Zheng He.

Origins

The Ming Dynasty began in 1368 after rebel forces led by Zhu Yuanzhang overthrew the Yuan Dynasty. Zhu became the Hongwu Emperor and established a new native Chinese dynasty.

Government and capital

The Ming strengthened imperial central authority and is often described as one of China’s more stable but autocratic dynasties. The court later moved the capital from Nanjing to Beijing, where the Forbidden City was built.

Economy and culture

Ming China experienced population growth, economic expansion, and major achievements in art and literature. Blue-and-white porcelain, vernacular fiction, and Neo-Confucian thought were especially prominent.

Foreign relations and exploration

Under the Ming, Chinese influence extended widely across East and Southeast Asia. Zheng He’s early 15th-century naval voyages reached Southeast Asia, India, and eastern Africa.

Decline and fall

In its final century, the dynasty faced fiscal strain, corruption, crop failure, and border unrest. Beijing fell in 1644, and the dynasty ended as the Qing took power.
