The series premiered on 2 May 2017 on Antena 3 and later reached a much wider international audience through Netflix.

Premise

The series follows an elaborate heist crew that takes hostages while attempting to execute highly organised robberies. The story focuses on the Professor’s strategy and the shifting dynamics between the robbers and the police. The show is told largely from the perspective of Tokyo, one of the robbers.

Production and release

La casa de papel was created by Álex Pina and first aired on Spain’s Antena 3 in 2017. Netflix later acquired distribution rights, which helped make the series internationally known as Money Heist.

International title

Outside Spanish-speaking markets, the show is commonly distributed as Money Heist. This English title is used in Netflix listings and English-language references.

Format and episodes

Sources disagree slightly on how the series is counted because Netflix reorganised the original broadcast. The original run is commonly given as 15 episodes, while Netflix versions and databases often describe five parts and 48 episodes overall. The original Spanish broadcast consisted of 15 episodes, while Netflix redistributed the series internationally in 22 episodes.
