Development

The Nambu pistol family was created by Kijirō Nambu in the early 20th century as Japan sought modern domestically designed military firearms. Early versions were produced at Koishikawa Arsenal, later renamed Tokyo Artillery Arsenal.

Variants

The family included multiple designs, with the Type A and Type B as early forms and the Type 14 as the most common service pistol. The Type 94 is another later variant associated with Japanese military use.

Nambu pistols were carried by officers and other personnel of the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy. They were used during the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Pacific War, and remained in circulation after 1945 in some regions.
