Nargis Dutt was born Fatima Rashid on 1 June 1929. She was the daughter of Jaddanbai, who was a singer, actress, and filmmaker.

She became a leading figure in Hindi cinema and is especially associated with the 1940s through the 1960s. Her performances in major films helped establish her reputation as one of Indian cinema's most important actresses. She is remembered for films including 'Mother India,' 'Barsaat,' 'Awara,' 'Shree 420,' and 'Andaz.'

Awards and recognition

Nargis received major recognition during her career, including the Padma Shri in 1958. She also received the National Film Award for 'Raat Aur Din' and remains honoured through the Nargis Dutt Award in India.

Later life and death

After reducing her acting work, she focused on family and social causes, including work for people with spasticity. She died in 1981, with sources describing pancreatic cancer as the cause.
