He was nominated by President Donald Trump and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 2017, filling the seat left vacant by Antonin Scalia. Before joining the Supreme Court, he served as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit from 2006 to 2017.

Early life and education

Neil Gorsuch was born in Denver, Colorado, on August 29, 1967. He attended Columbia University, Harvard Law School, and the University of Oxford, where he earned a D.Phil. He built an academic and legal background that later led to federal judicial appointments.

Legal career

Before becoming a judge, Gorsuch worked in private practice and served in the U.S. Department of Justice as Principal Deputy Associate Attorney General. He also clerked for Judge David B. Sentelle and for Supreme Court Justices Byron White and Anthony Kennedy.

Federal judicial service

President George W. Bush appointed Gorsuch to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit in 2006. He served on that court until his elevation to the Supreme Court in 2017.

Supreme Court tenure

Gorsuch has served as an associate justice since April 10, 2017. He is known for his textualist and originalist approaches to legal interpretation and has been part of several major Supreme Court decisions.
