Jerome Young trained under Ray Candy and began wrestling in 1992 in the United States Wrestling Association (USWA). He adopted the name New Jack early in his career, reportedly inspired by the film *New Jack City*. He then worked in other Southern promotions such as Smoky Mountain Wrestling.
