Set in a future where giant monsters called Kaiju attack Earth through a portal in the Pacific Ocean, the film follows humanity’s use of giant robots called Jaegers to fight back. It launched the Pacific Rim franchise and was followed by a sequel and an animated series.

Premise

The film is set in a near-future world where Kaiju emerge from a breach beneath the Pacific Ocean and devastate coastal cities. Humanity responds by creating Jaegers, enormous piloted robots connected by a mental link called the Drift.

Production

Pacific Rim was directed by Guillermo del Toro from a screenplay by del Toro, Travis Beacham, and Drew Pearce. It was produced by Legendary Pictures and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Reception

The film received generally positive reviews and was noted for its visual effects and large-scale action scenes. It also performed more strongly internationally than in North America.

Franchise

Pacific Rim became the first entry in a wider franchise. It was followed by the 2018 sequel Pacific Rim Uprising and the animated series Pacific Rim: The Black.
