Early life and playing career

Patrick Roy was born on October 5, 1965, in Quebec City, Quebec. He became a professional goaltender after being drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1984. He played 11 seasons with the Canadiens before being traded to the Colorado Avalanche, where he finished his playing career after eight seasons.

Championships and awards

Roy won four Stanley Cups, three Vezina Trophies, and three Conn Smythe Trophies. He is also noted for his NHL records and his reputation as one of the sport's most successful goaltenders.

Coaching career

After retiring as a player in 2003, Roy moved into coaching and executive roles. He coached the Quebec Remparts and the Colorado Avalanche, and later became head coach of the New York Islanders. His most recent NHL role was head coach of the Islanders from January 2024 to April 2026.

Legacy

Roy is widely regarded as one of the greatest goaltenders in NHL history. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006 and named one of the NHL's 100 Greatest Players in 2017.
