It is the fourth main entry in the Persona series and follows a group of high school students in the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad, or S.E.E.S., as they investigate the Dark Hour and battle Shadows. The game blends dungeon exploration with social simulation elements and has received several expanded releases and a full remake.

Gameplay

Persona 3 combines turn-based dungeon crawling with life-simulation mechanics. Players spend time across a school year building relationships and improving combat abilities, while also exploring Tartarus during the Dark Hour.

Story

The story centres on a transfer student who joins S.E.E.S. at Gekkoukan High School. The group investigates the Dark Hour, a hidden period between days when Shadows appear and most people are unaware of what is happening.

Release history

The original game launched for PlayStation 2 in Japan in 2006, followed by North American and European releases in 2007 and 2008. Atlus later released Persona 3 FES, Persona 3 Portable, and Persona 3 Reload as expanded or remade versions.

Series role

Persona 3 is considered a major entry in the Persona franchise and helped define the series’ modern structure. Later games and remakes built on its social-link and calendar-based design.
