Boyle was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania, in 1935 and later moved into acting after early work in Philadelphia and military service. He studied acting in New York with Uta Hagen and performed with Second City in Chicago.

Film career

He first drew major attention in *Joe* and went on to appear in films such as *Taxi Driver*, *The Brink’s Job*, *Outland*, and *Young Frankenstein*. His screen image shifted between hard-edged dramatic parts and comic roles.
