Early life and career

Phil Spector was born in the Bronx in 1939 and moved into music as a teenager. He first found success with the Teddy Bears and quickly established himself as a songwriter and producer.

Spector’s best-known contribution was the “Wall of Sound”, a production method that used layered instrumentation and studio effects to create a fuller, more dramatic recording. The style became highly influential in pop music.

Major recordings and collaborations

During the 1960s, Spector produced hit records for groups such as the Ronettes and the Righteous Brothers, and later worked with major acts including the Beatles. His productions were widely noted for their sonic impact.

Legal trouble and death

Spector was convicted in 2009 of second-degree murder in the 2003 shooting death of Lana Clarkson and received a prison sentence of 19 years to life. He died in prison in 2021.
