Shastri was born in Bombay in 1962 and emerged as a right-handed batting all-rounder who also bowled slow left-arm orthodox. He was known during his playing days for versatility and for contributing in multiple roles.

International playing career

He represented India in Test and one-day cricket from 1981 to 1992. His career totals include 3,830 Test runs and 151 Test wickets, along with 3,108 ODI runs and 129 ODI wickets.

Major achievements

Shastri was a member of India’s 1983 World Cup squad and was later named Champion of Champions in the 1985 World Championship of Cricket. These achievements are among the most cited highlights of his playing career.

Coaching and administration
