Gregory Reid Wiseman is an American NASA astronaut, U.S. Navy captain, and test pilot born in Baltimore, Maryland. He flew to the International Space Station in 2014 as a flight engineer on Expedition 40/41 and later served as commander of NASA’s Artemis II mission, the first crewed lunar flyby since Apollo 17.
Early life and education
Wiseman was born in Baltimore and graduated from Dulaney High School in 1993. He earned a B.S. in computer and systems engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, an M.S. in systems engineering from Johns Hopkins University, and a certificate in space systems from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School.
Military and NASA career
After ROTC and naval flight training, Wiseman became a naval aviator and test pilot before being selected by NASA in 2009. NASA later identified him as a veteran astronaut with extensive military, engineering, and flight experience.
Spaceflight experience
Wiseman flew his first mission in 2014 as a flight engineer on Expedition 40/41 aboard the International Space Station. During that mission, he completed two spacewalks and spent about 165 days in orbit.
Artemis II
Wiseman was named commander of Artemis II, NASA’s first crewed mission planned to fly around the Moon since 1972. NASA and contemporary reporting describe this as his most recent major role in spaceflight leadership.
