Murphy was born in Carbonear, Newfoundland, in March 1947 and was raised in St. John's. He studied at Memorial University of Newfoundland and later attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar.

Murphy worked extensively with CBC in radio and television. He became especially well known as host of Cross Country Checkup, a national call-in program, and also appeared on CBC's The National and other CBC programs.
