Early life

Richard Chamberlain was born George Richard Chamberlain on March 31, 1934, in Los Angeles, California, and spent part of his youth in Beverly Hills.

Television breakthrough

He first rose to fame as Dr. James Kildare in the medical drama *Dr. Kildare* (1961–1966). The role established him as a leading screen actor in the 1960s.

Miniseries career

Chamberlain later became especially associated with prestige television miniseries, including *Shōgun* and *The Thorn Birds*, which brought him broad international recognition.

Personal life

He kept his sexuality private for much of his career. In 2003, he publicly acknowledged that he was gay in his memoir *Shattered Love*.

Death

Chamberlain died in Waimānalo, Hawaii, on March 29, 2025, at age 90, after complications from a stroke.
