Early life and family

Richard Lee Petty was born on July 2, 1937, in Level Cross, North Carolina, to Lee Petty, an early stock-car racing pioneer. He grew up as part of one of the sport's best-known racing families, which would later include his own career and that of his son, Kyle Petty.

NASCAR driving career

Petty competed in NASCAR from 1958 to 1992, establishing several major records. He won a record 200 NASCAR Cup Series races, seven Cup Series championships (1964, 1967, 1971, 1972, 1974, 1975, and 1979), and a record seven Daytona 500 victories. He also achieved 123 pole positions and 712 top-ten finishes in 1,184 starts, along with a record for consecutive starts.

Legacy and honours

Petty's achievements made him one of the most celebrated figures in American motorsport, earning him the nickname "The King." He was inducted into the inaugural class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2010, cementing his legacy as a central figure in stock car racing history.
