Roberto Luongo is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender best known for his NHL career with the New York Islanders, Florida Panthers, and Vancouver Canucks.

Roberto Luongo is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender best known for his NHL career with the New York Islanders, Florida Panthers, and Vancouver Canucks. He was selected fourth overall in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft and later became one of the most accomplished goaltenders in league history. Luongo won two Olympic gold medals for Canada and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2022.

Early life and draft

Roberto Luongo was born on April 4, 1979 in Montréal, Quebec. He was selected fourth overall by the New York Islanders in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft and began his NHL career with that team.

NHL career

Luongo played 1,044 regular-season NHL games and won 489 of them across 19 seasons with the New York Islanders, Florida Panthers, and Vancouver Canucks. He is the all-time franchise leader in wins for both the Vancouver Canucks and Florida Panthers. Luongo served as captain of the Canucks from 2008 to 2010, an unusual role for an NHL goaltender. He won the Jennings Trophy in 2010–11 with Cory Schneider. He retired in 2019.

International play

Luongo represented Canada in major international competitions and won five championships in total. He won Olympic gold medals in 2010 and 2014, World Championship gold in 2003 and 2004, and a World Cup of Hockey title in 2004.

Legacy and honours

Luongo finished among the NHL’s all-time leaders in games played, wins, and shutouts for a goaltender. His achievements led to his election to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2022.
