Robin Cavendish

Early life and polio

Robin Cavendish was born in Middleton, Derbyshire, in 1930. He contracted polio at age 28, after which he became paralysed and dependent on a mechanical ventilator. He was initially given a prognosis of only three months to live.

Advocacy and assistive devices

Cavendish worked to improve independence for disabled people and helped develop mobility equipment, including a wheelchair with a built-in respirator. He also supported efforts to document and organise services for people living with severe paralysis. He became a prominent advocate for disabled people in Britain.

Legacy

Cavendish became an influential figure in British disability history. His story received wider public attention through the 2017 film Breathe and later commemorations of his life and work.
