Early life

Rocco Francis Marchegiano was born in Brockton, Massachusetts, on September 1, 1923. He was the son of Italian immigrants and later adopted the ring name Rocky Marciano.

Professional boxing career

Marciano began his professional career in the late 1940s and quickly rose in the heavyweight division. He became world champion in 1952 after knocking out Jersey Joe Walcott in Philadelphia.

Championship reign and record

Marciano defended the heavyweight title six times before retiring in 1956. He finished his career with a 49–0 record and 43 knockouts, a rare undefeated mark in heavyweight boxing.

Death and legacy

Marciano died in a plane crash near Newton, Iowa, on August 31, 1969. He is widely remembered as one of boxing's greatest heavyweights and as the only heavyweight champion to leave the sport undefeated.
