Hauer was born in Breukelen, Utrecht, Netherlands on 23 January 1944. He began his screen career in 1969 with the title role in the Dutch television series *Floris*. His early success in Dutch television and film helped launch an international screen career.

International breakthrough

Hauer gained major recognition for the film *Turkish Delight* (1973) and later became internationally known for his portrayal of Roy Batty in *Blade Runner* (1982). This role established him as a notable presence in international science fiction cinema.

Later film and television work

From the 1990s onward, Hauer appeared frequently in supporting roles across mainstream films and lower-budget productions. His later film work included roles in *The Hitcher*, *Buffy the Vampire Slayer*, *Batman Begins*, *Sin City*, and *The Rite*.
