History

Benfica was founded on 28 February 1904 as Sport Lisboa in Lisbon. It later became known as Sport Lisboa e Benfica after a merger. The club developed into one of Portugal’s most prominent football clubs and is a leading member of the country’s “Big Three”, alongside Sporting CP and FC Porto.

Honours

Sources describe Benfica as Portugal’s most successful club. Its league-title totals are reported as either 37 or 38 depending on the source and publication date. The club has also won multiple domestic cups and two European Cups/Champions League titles.

Stadium

Benfica plays home matches at Estádio da Luz in Lisbon. The current stadium opened in 2003 and replaced an earlier stadium of the same name.

Rivalries
