He was the first European captain in Canadiens history and served as the team’s captain for a record 10 seasons. Early life and junior career

Koivu was born in Turku, Finland, and developed in the TPS system. He debuted in Finland’s top league in 1992 and won Finnish championships with TPS in 1993 and 1995.
