Early life and education

Sam Walton was born on March 29, 1918, in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. He later moved with his family to Missouri. Walton studied at the University of Missouri, where he earned a degree in economics in 1940. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Intelligence Corps.

Retail career

Walton worked in retail before opening the first Walmart store in Rogers, Arkansas, in 1962. He later helped establish Sam’s Club in 1983, extending his discount retail model into warehouse clubs.

Business impact

Walton’s focus on low prices, high volume sales, and operational efficiency helped Walmart expand rapidly. By 1990, Walmart was the largest retail sales chain in the United States.

Later life and legacy

Walton remained closely involved with Walmart until the late 1980s and received major public honours near the end of his life. He died on April 5, 1992, in Little Rock, Arkansas. His family later became one of the wealthiest in the United States.
