History

San Antonio began in 1718 as a Spanish mission outpost centered on Mission San Antonio de Valero, later known as the Alamo. It played an important role in the Texas Revolution and later grew into a major city in Texas.

The city lies on the Balcones Escarpment at the headwaters of the San Antonio River, in south-central Texas. It is about 80 miles (130 km) southwest of Austin and forms the core of a large metropolitan area.
