Sanjeev Kumar was born into a Gujarati family in Surat on 9 July 1938, then part of the Bombay Presidency in British India. He was known by the nickname Haribhai and later entered theatre before moving into film acting.

He began his screen career in the early 1960s and became known for strong supporting and lead performances across drama, comedy, and romance. He was noted for playing a wide range of ages and character types, which contributed to his reputation as a versatile performer.
