Sergio Busquets Burgos is a Spanish former professional footballer who played as a defensive midfielder. He spent most of his club career with FC Barcelona, later joining Inter Miami, and also represented Spain at international level. He is widely regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders of his era.

Early life and youth career

Busquets was born in Sabadell, Spain, in 1988 and developed through youth systems in Catalonia before joining FC Barcelona's academy. His father, Carles Busquets, was also a professional goalkeeper.

Club career

He progressed into Barcelona's first team in 2008 and became a central figure in the club's midfield for more than a decade. Busquets made his senior debut for FC Barcelona in 2008 and became a regular starter from the 2009–10 season. He won multiple major trophies with Barcelona, including UEFA Champions League and La Liga titles. After leaving Barcelona in 2023, he joined Major League Soccer club Inter Miami.

International career

Busquets debuted for Spain in 2009 and became a mainstay in the national team for 14 years. He earned 143 caps and scored two goals. He was part of Spain's squads that won the 2010 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2012. He retired from international football in December 2022.

Busquets was known for his positioning, anticipation, passing, and ability to control the tempo of matches from deep midfield. He is commonly described as a highly intelligent defensive midfielder.
