The character first appeared in the 1985 animated film The Secret of the Sword and later appeared in the 1985–1987 series She-Ra: Princess of Power, as well as the 2018 Netflix reboot She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.

Origin and concept

She-Ra was created as a female counterpart to He-Man within the Masters of the Universe brand. The character was introduced in the animated film The Secret of the Sword before becoming the lead of a standalone television series.

1985 animated series

She-Ra: Princess of Power followed Princess Adora’s transformation into She-Ra and her role in the fight against Hordak and the Evil Horde on Etheria. The series established the character as a central figure in the franchise’s original animated continuity.

2018 reboot

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power reimagined the character for a new audience and is set in a different continuity from the 1980s series. It follows Adora’s relationship with the Horde, her discovery of the Sword of Protection, and her role in the resistance.

Cultural significance

She-Ra became one of the best-known female action-adventure characters in 1980s children’s animation. The 2018 reboot renewed interest in the character and brought She-Ra to a new generation of viewers.
