Early life and domestic career

Dhawan was born in New Delhi and came through Delhi’s domestic cricket system. He made his first-class debut for Delhi in the 2004–05 Ranji Trophy season and progressed into senior representative cricket through consistent domestic performances.

International career

Dhawan debuted for India in T20Is in October 2011, then in Tests in March 2013 and ODIs in October 2010. He scored a century on his Test debut against Australia in March 2013. He became known for strong starts as an opening batter and for major performances in ICC events, including the 2013 Champions Trophy.
